The city of Vancouver was incorporated 6 April 1886.
In 2006, Vancouver is the third most densely populated city in North America
after New York City and San Francisco.
Its residents are ethnically and linguistically diverse;
52% do not speak English as their first language.
People of English, Scottish and Irish origins were historically the largest ethnic groups in the city. Germans are the next largest European group in Vancouver.
In the 1980s, influx of Chinese immigrants from Hong Kong, mainland China and Taiwan established Vancouver as one of the highest concentrations of
ethnic Chinese residents in North America
(second most popular destination for immigrants in Canada - after Toronto).
While forestry remains its largest industry,
Vancouver is well known as an urban centre surrounded by nature,
making tourism its second largest industry.
It also is the third largest film production centre in North America
after Los Angeles and New York City, earning it the nickname Hollywood North.
